We’ve all done it—left something behind in the car without giving it a second thought. But when your vehicle sits under the hot sun or in a freezing car park, even everyday items can turn into problems. Some things just don’t belong in a parked car, whether it’s for safety, security, or the simple fact that they might get ruined. Let’s break down the items you should always take with you when you step out of the driver’s seat.

Electronics and Gadgets

Laptops, tablets, phones, cameras—if it’s expensive and can be easily snatched, don’t leave it sitting in plain view. Beyond theft, heat can do serious damage to batteries and screens. Even inside a glove box, extreme temperatures can cause electronics to malfunction. A customer once told us their phone battery swelled up after just two hours in a locked car on a 35°C day. Yikes.

Aerosol Cans

Hairspray, deodorant, bug spray, paint—if it comes in an aerosol can, it absolutely does not belong in a hot car. Heat increases pressure inside the can, and that can lead to explosions. Yep, actual explosions. That’s not something you want happening while you’re picking up groceries.

Plastic Water Bottles

We know—keeping a bottle of water in the car sounds like a smart move. But not when it’s plastic. Studies suggest that chemicals in plastic (like BPA) can leach into the water when exposed to high temperatures. On top of that, a full clear water bottle can actually focus sunlight like a magnifying glass and has, in rare cases, caused fires on car seats.

Perishable Food

We’ve seen it plenty of times—someone leaves takeaway leftovers or a bag of groceries in the back seat and forgets. Hours later, you’ve got a car that smells like something crawled under the seat and died. Food goes bad fast in a hot car, especially dairy and meat. Even an hour in the wrong conditions can make it unsafe to eat.

Medications

Many medications lose their effectiveness or even become dangerous when exposed to heat or cold. If the label says “store in a cool, dry place,” your car is not it. Insulin, for example, becomes ineffective if it gets too hot. That’s not just an inconvenience—it can be life-threatening.

Batteries

Loose batteries—AA, AAA, or even power tool batteries—can leak or get damaged from temperature swings. In some cases, they’ve even caught fire. Keep them out of the glove box or boot unless they’re stored properly and short-term.

Important Documents

Registration papers, insurance details, passports, or work files? Best not to leave them behind. If your car is broken into or stolen, those documents can be a goldmine for identity thieves. Even a quick coffee stop could turn into a major headache if someone sees the chance to grab your paperwork.

Pets and Children

This one’s non-negotiable. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a parked car, even for a “minute.” The temperature inside can spike by over 20°C in just 10 minutes on a warm day, turning the car into a deadly oven. It’s tragic how often this still happens, even though we all know better.

Being a little more mindful about what stays and what goes can save you money, prevent damage, and most importantly—keep everyone safe. Think of your car like an oven or a freezer, depending on the weather. If it doesn’t belong in either, it probably doesn’t belong in your parked vehicle.
